Want complete control over your mashups? Our brand-new Mashup Mode lets you place tracks and samples anywhere on a free-form canvas, giving you total creative freedom!

DJ.Studio started as a powerful tool for creating DJ mixes, with a timeline editor with two decks and transition windows. However, with the introduction of Stem Separation, DJ.Studio also became a great tool for creating mashups. But we realized that some features designed for mixing—like transition windows—weren’t really needed for mashups and could even be confusing.

That’s why we built Mashup Mode! Instead of a DJ timeline, you now have a flexible workspace where you can freely arrange and layer audio without constraints. This video shows you how to works or read the information below.

When you now create a new project in DJ.Studio, you can choose if you want to make a DJ mix or a mashup. The Studio will look and work different based on that choice.

  • When creating a new project, you can now choose between “DJ Mix” or “Mashup” mode.

  • DJ Mix Mode keeps the traditional timeline with transitions and automation.

  • Mashup Mode gives you a free canvas to place and edit tracks however you like.

  • The interface adapts based on your choice.

Difference between Mashup Mode and DJ Mixes

With DJ mixing, you have a playlist with lots of tracks, you transition from one song to the other and DJ.Studio can help you to harmonize your playlist based on key and BPM.

When making a mashup, you want a free canvas, where you can place each element wherever you want.

In Mashup mode:

  1. You can use the whole canvas.

  2. There is no playlist; the canvas is one huge track.

  3. You have 1 master lane, instead of 2. That 1 Master lane dictates the tempo. The tempo lane will reflect the tempo of any track or sample placed in here.

  4. You have 4 sample lanes, no voice-over lane.

  5. There are no transition windows between tracks. You can freely add tracks and drag them around.

  6. Samples are not linked to any track, so if you drag the track in the master lane, the samples that were below that track will not move with it.

  7. You can only export to audio or video, not to playlist or any other platforms.

  8. Mashups cannot be side-loaded into DJ mixes. If you want to use the mashup in a DJ mix, you need to export your mashup as an audio file and then upload it as a new track in your DJ mix project.

Difference between Legacy Mashup projects and NEW Mashup projects

Until Feb 7 2025, you could create a mashup project like this: You created a mix project and when saving your project for the first time, you could save it as a mashup.

Those mashup projects could be loaded into other DJ.Studio Mix projects.

The new Mashup projects can't be loaded into other Mix projects because the timeline works in a totally different way now for Mashup and DJ mix projects.

So that's why you will see a Your Mashups area on the Home screen, with

  • Mashup: mashup projects that work via the mashup timeline ( free canvas) and can only be exported as a separate audio file.

  • Mashup ( legacy) : mashup projects that work via the mixing timeline and can be loaded into other projects. It is not possible to add these types of projects anymore.

FAQ

Q: I have the Studio one-time license. Why can't I use Mashup mode?
