Working with MP4 Video in DJ.Studio
Working with MP4 videos can sometimes be tricky, as video processing performance depends heavily on your device — both in terms of hardware and software — as well as the specific MP4 file you’re using. This means that certain issues may only occur on specific setups and can be hard for us to reproduce on our end.
Why performance varies
Some devices support hardware acceleration for video processing, which means they use dedicated chips (like for decoding or encoding MP4/H.264). When this support isn’t available, the system falls back to software-based processing, which is slower and puts more load on your CPU. On older or lower-powered devices, this can result in sluggish performance, long export times, or even crashes.
Not all MP4 files are equal
MP4 is just a container format, and not all MP4s are built the same. Differences in:
Bitrate
Codec settings
Resolution
Audio format or number of audio tracks
...can all influence how well a file works. A heavily compressed or poorly formatted MP4 might cause issues on one device, but work fine on another. That’s why some videos may work perfectly, while others don’t.
Troubleshooting Tips
If you're running into problems with MP4 videos, here are some things you can try:
Convert the MP4 file If a specific video won’t export properly, try converting it first using an online tool like cloudconvert.com/mp4-converter or download Handbrake video transcoder. This can help fix codec or formatting issues that may be causing problems.
Check GPU usage On Windows, make sure your PC is set to use the GPU for video processing and export, if supported.
Update your drivers Especially on Windows, ensure your graphics drivers are up to date (download them directly from the NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel website if possible).
Switch to Software Encoding In the export settings, try setting Video Acceleration to "Software" instead of "Hardware".
Roll Back Your NVIDIA Driver One common cause of video export failures, especially for 4K/60 FPS files, is a compatibility issue with certain NVIDIA graphics drivers. Use an earlier, stable GPU driver version (e.g., 581.80), as newer versions may have broken hardware video encoding functionality. After rolling back, reboot your system and retry the export in DJ.Studio.
Ensure Sufficient Disk Space Check that there is enough free disk space in the Exports folder. Open DJ.Studio's Settings, navigate to Folders, and update the export folder to a location with sufficient space if needed.
