What is the Input Lane?
The Input lane is a dedicated lane in the Studio where you can record audio directly into your mix or mashup project. It is side-chained to the master, which means the music volume automatically ducks when a recording or voice-over plays. This makes it ideal for radio shows, podcast-style mixes, spoken intros and outros, or recording instruments over your mix.
How to Set Up the Input Lane
Before you can record, you need to enable the Input lane and select your audio input device.
You can enable the Input lane in two ways:
Quick toggle: Click the eye icon in the top right corner of the Studio, or use the View button in the studio toolbar. From there, toggle the Input lane on.
Via Settings: Go to Settings > Studio > Interface and set the Input lane to “On.”
Select your input device
Go to Settings > General > Audio > Input Device and choose the microphone or audio interface you want to record from.
How to Use the Input Lane
1. Enable the Input lane using the eye icon in the top right corner of the Studio, or via the View button in the toolbar.
2. Select your input device at Settings > General > Audio > Input Device.
3. Open a mix or mashup project.
4. Click the Input lane on the left side of the screen.
5. Click the Record button. A 4-beat countdown plays before recording begins.
6. Click Record again or press Pause/Space bar to stop recording.
7. Your recorded clip will appear in the Input lane.
You can record multiple clips in the Input lane. Each clip behaves like a sample. You can move it, trim it, and apply effects.
Adjusting the Recording
Ducking and gain
The Input lane is side-chained to the master lane. This means the music volume is automatically lowered (ducked) when the voice-over or recording plays. You can adjust:
Ducking amount: how much the master volume dips when the Input lane plays.
Input gain: the recording level of your input device.
Both controls are available when you click the Input lane on the left side of the Studio.
Noise removal and reverb
When you hover over a recorded clip in the Input lane, you will see two buttons:
• Background noise filter: removes background noise from the recording.
• Reverb: adds reverb to the recording.
Effects and automation
You can apply all regular automations, EQ, and effects to a recorded clip in the Input lane, just like any other sample in DJ.Studio.
Using the Input Lane for Imported Audio
You don’t have to record directly in DJ.Studio to use the Input lane. You can also import a pre-recorded audio file (for example, a voice-over you recorded in another app) and place it in the Input lane. The ducking and side-chain behaviour will apply automatically.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the Input lane in Mashup mode?
The Input lane is available in DJ Mix mode. In Mashup mode, there is no separate Input lane by default — you can use the sample lanes instead. Check your project settings to verify lane configuration.
What happened to the Voice-over lane?
The Voice-over lane has been renamed to Input lane in DJ.Studio 4.1. It works the same way, with the addition of direct recording support. If you see references to the “Voice-over lane” in older documentation or tutorials, they refer to the same lane.
